The City of Rehovot

Rehovot is a pleasant and tranquil city located in the central part of Israel, 25 Km. south of Tel-Aviv and 90 Km. from Jerusalem. Founded in 1890, it is one of the first Jewish towns. The name is quoted from the bible (genesis 26:22) and denotes wide expanses. The population is currently 105,000. Probably one of the most significant things about Rehovot today is that two nationally significant institutions of research and learning are located in the city. These are the Weitzman institute of Science and the Faculty of Agriculture, Hebrew University. Both campuses form a very nice northern part of the city. The Weitz Center for Development Studies is located in this region. Rehovot also boasts a flourishing high-tech industrial park which includes an entertainment area of restaurants and cafés.

Food
Most of the meals during your stay at the Weitz Center will be taken either in the Faculty of Agriculture cafeteria, or in restaurants in Rehovot or around the country.  The faculty cafeteria serves a buffet style wide selection of main dishes, side dishes, salads and vegetarian dishes.  Israel does not have a nationally unique cuisine. The diverse ethnic origins of most Israeli's has created a combination of universal cooking. Meat (especially beef and chicken), fish, dairy products, vegetables, bread and legumes are all prevalent in most homes and restaurants. You should be aware of the "Kosher" regulations of the Jewish dietary laws. According to Jewish tradition various animals cannot be eaten. Pork, for instance, is strictly prohibited according to Jewish Kosher laws. Most restaurants and eating places will not serve it. Meat and dairy products cannot be eaten or served together. Most types of fish (tuna, carp, tilapia, salmon, herring etc.) are permitted, however shellfish, such as lobsters, oysters, shrimp, clams and crabs, are all forbidden.  Most restaurants observe these regulations, as does the Faculty cafeteria.

Money
The New Israeli Shekel (NIS), is divided into 100 agorot. Notes are in denominations of NIS200, NIS 100, NIS 50 and NIS 20. Money can be changed in the small exchange bureaus found along Herzl Street (the main avenue of Rehovot), in the shopping malls or at banks which are open from 8.30 am to 12.30pm from   Sunday to Thursday and from 4pm to 6pm on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Banks also open  from 8.30am to 12pm on Fridays. The current exchange rate is approximately 4NIS to  1USD.

Communications & email
All apartments are equipped with a telephone for incoming calls (including international) or for room to room connections. Public phones are widespread in the Faculty complex and in the City of Rehovot.

The international access code for Israel is +972. The outgoing code is 00, 012, 013 or 014 (different providers) followed by the relevant country code. Public phones are card operated and are readily available. Phone cards can be purchased in the post office or many small kiosks (verify beforehand if the specific card is suitable for the destination you wish to call). The local mobile phone operators use GSM networks and have roaming agreements with most international operators.

During the course you will have unlimited access to wide band email and internet services.
